And that reminds me after attending the Claflin University lyric theatre production of Die Zauberflöte Thursday night, I was extremely critical of their performance. This book made such an impression on me back in 1974 that I have never forgotten the name of it, or the name of the author. And considering the amount of books I have read and forgotten since then, that says a lot about Mano. Businesses like this needs to good care on their reputation as well as their investments. Nan, you're quite right. In fact, through the 1950s the perception was widespread that the YMCA was an anti-Catholic organization, witness this statement in 1954 from the bishops of the Philippines:

"WHEREFORE, WE, the members of the Hierarchy of the Philippines, hereby declare that the YMCA is a Protestant organization and, as such, should be avoided by Catholics, that is, no Catholic may be a member of this organization or contribute to its suppport or lend his name for propaganda purposes, or make use of its facilities."

Needless to say, at least in the secular Ys, the only thing Catholics have to fear is the very secularization of the organization. As for the more religious Ys in the South, I don't know.

The irony is that the heartbroken NBA fan Drew Carey, of Cleveland himself (and even Cavs playoff tickets were given away once as a prize on his game show), knows James found better tax advantages. His Reason Foundation friends have more knowledge. He's been trying to reverse 90's-2000's "All About Barker" mentality on his show by no longer being called "star of the show," and referring to staff by name on-air ("Big Dave," "Rich," and the models each by name, along with producers). He refuses to even be nominated at the Daytime Emmys for "best game show host," preferring to share the wins with the team.

A recent Esquire article about Carey's attitude in light of a potential cheating incident proved Carey was honest and let it show. A Twitter Carey shared from a friend said, "There is no LeBron in Team." And cheating will be punished. Carey let the contestant know he cheated, and they promptly showed it to the contestant.

To This We've Come -- you have just reminded me that the Magda I saw in 2003 is doing her doctoral recital tomorrow, and I cannot attend (work).

For me, "To This We've Come" reminds me of a strange room and a strange setting -- but too the inside stories of that Magda and myself, and the story of how I nearly lost my spot in the recital because Magda didn't want to do the suicide scene. The story of that Magda and the months leading to The Consul and the recital in question remain a personal heartbreak and we've mocked it. I've thought of this after bad football losses where I was forced to starve on Thanksgiving and after missing a big 10k with illness on race morning.

I think of "To This We've Come" after anything that can infuriate me. When I do, she zings me with "The Consul!" And I've hidden myself in the back to greet other singers if she's singing and do her last. Well, I sang in Beethoven's Mass in C Major last month and she ended up using my trickery on me. I was meeting an old friend when she pulled the rug on me!

Oh, how can a 32-year old soprano from Laurel, Mississippi just pique me operatically, and make me just another of the opera buffs.

A friend told me that YMCA was a misnomer, since they didn't cater to the young, it wasn't all male, and they weren't Christian. He suggested they just call it the "A" although I think he had some other letters following it... :)

Seriously, it saddens me to see an organization like this abandon - if not renounce - it's wonderful Christian heritage. What must their founders be thinking?

They will have to answer for this - if not in the here-and-now, then in the hereafter.

We'll hear the ESPN boys of the UK calling their coverage of the Premiership and La Liga again this fall with those 5 PM (BST - 11 AM ET) or 8 PM (CET - 2 PM ET) games that will be lunchtime affairs although former US MNT star John Harkes won't be in the analyst's chair. Harkes was tragically part of one of football's blackest moments with the Escobar "autogol" that I wrote Harkes with the goal instead of the Escobar "autogol" since I didn't know they don't reward attackers for defenders' mistakes.

And that reminds me that should be a "law of the game". Reward the player who made the shot that was accidentally deflected by the opponent into their own goal.

As for vuvuzelas, I wouldn't be surprised if FIFA photographer Brooks Parkenridge brings a few back and calls the manufacturer of them for his "day job". Those of you who may not know that is the photography pseudonym for The Price Is Right host Drew Carey, who might even bring a few for small prizes in pricing games. Carey has gained a reputation for finding odd prizes on the show, and just imagine when next Monday (the 19th) comes and Drew has a few as prizes.

Too many people prefer listening to the Spanish-language call of matches because of the wild loudmouths who scream.
