I think it was so unlike anything else on the tube that it caught me off-guard. Later, I fancied myself a poet, in college, and went on to produce some magnificent fishwrap. My parents' culture consisted of prime time TV, Readers' Digest, and baseball on the radio. The Tennyson show gave me at least a glimpse into a bigger world.Star Larvaehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07461123659751257133noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9284635.post-1162594963245383832006-11-03T17:02:00.000-06:002006-11-03T17:02:00.000-06:00If the recitation were good enough, imagine how ex...If the recitation were good enough, imagine how exciting it could be to hear the words of the Declaration of Independence or the Gettysburg Address out loud! I thought I was the ONLY one who finds his poetic reading style lacking.

Back in the frontier days of this nation, there were traveling companies, or individuals, that would recite selections of poems, plays, even selections from the Constitution or the daily newspaper. Few people could read and/or afford the materials. They would pay the reader or pay them in kind (with dinner, supplies, lodging, etc)

I'm not sure, today, how many people would turn out for that type of thing. Well, perhaps, more then I think since Shakespeare in the Park productions are fairly well attended.Cathy_of_Alexhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16795566831031491371noreply@blogger.com
