News this morning that the president has nominated John Roberts to be the new Chief Justice, and that the flags will fly at half-staff for both Chief Justice Rehnquist and the hurricane victims. I hope people do take a moment to honor the memory of the Chief, a great man and jurist, one of only two on the court to vote against Roe v. Wade. It was the first time in a long time that a Supreme Court justice died in office, and he should get a few moments of our time without having to share them with anyone else. And as Fr. Welzbacher said in church yesterday, may God grant him a portion of the mercy which he, as Chief Justice, showed the unborn in his votes for life.
