The Film Meme

By Mitchell

Well, it's been awhile since we've done a meme here. Not because we haven't been asked, we'll add, but because we haven't had the time or the energy (more's the pity). But we recently got the movie meme from our friend Cathy of Alex, and this one looked too intriguing to pass up. With my Hadleybloggers caught between vacations and work, it seems this one is up to me. I can't guarantee I won't change my mind, but here goes (complete with links):

Your Favorite Film? Depending on what kind of mood I'm in, either This Sporting Life, Apocalypse Now or 2001: A Space Odyssey

Your Favorite Film Priest? Bing Crosby in Going My Way

Your Favorite Film Nun? Loretta Young and Celeste Holm in Come to the Stable

Your Favorite Religious Movie? Beckett

Your Favorite Comedy? The Producers (the original)

Your Favorite Action Film? Bullitt

Your Favorite Thriller? The Manchurian Candidate (the original)

Your Favorite Foreign Film? The Seventh Seal

Favorite "Alternative" Lifestyle Film? Mulholland Dr. (also a candidate for the most confusing)

Your Favorite Animal Film? March of the Penguins

Your Favorite Animated Film? Bugs Bunny in Rabbit of Seville

Your Favorite "B" Movie? Planet of the Apes (the original)

Your Favorite "Newer" "B" Movie? Gone in 60 Seconds

Your Favorite Black Comedy Film? (As In Humor) The Hospital

Your favorite Period Film? 1776

Your Favorite Biblical Film? Ben Hur

In your opinion, the most important film in Cinematic history? Birth of a Nation. The start of modern motion pictures.

Well, that was easy. Anyone else out there want to offer ideas?

  1. Mitchell: I got ya, FINALLY!

Good choices. You have some films I've never heard of before.

The Seventh Seal was almost my foreign film choice too.

  2. One of my (few) claims to fame is the night in San Francisco about 15 years ago with some other folks that I just finished a week with when someone suggested that we have our cabbie do a "Bullet Jump" for us up on the top of Pacific Heights.

For those who aren't familiar with San Francisco, it is built on many hills and some of them are quite steep and narrow at the top. Thus you are going up at a 45 degree or more angle at a rapid clip, there may be a 30 foot wide flat spot at the top for the cross street and then you go down the other side at a 45 degree or more angle.

The object of the Bullet Jump is to get all four wheels of the car in the air before coming down and heading down the other side. Steve McQueen was great at it.

When I drive in San Francisco, I take those hills rather slowly. But our lady cabbie had no qualms and did the deed for us!

I liked the Producers very much and The Planet of the Apes for some reason, but when I saw The Manchurian Candidate in the theater when I was in college, I never could quite get it. I suppose I should see it again.

    Ben Hur was great too.

  3. I'm offended. You never posted the memes I tagged you with! (And I know that was a grammatically-incorrect sentence).

We're in agreement for Gone in 60 Seconds, but I have that listed under "Action".

    I miss you guys.

  4. Cathy,
You did get us. I think one of the great uses of lists like this is in discovering new movies. Back when I was in college, I used to go through old TV Guides at Wilson Library at the U, reading about old Academy Awards shows and making notes on movies I hadn't heard of that I wanted to see. Some of them were croppers, but I found more than my share of interesting titles that way. I know Terry Teachout doesn't much like The Seventh Seal, but he can't always be right!

    Ray,
Definitely give The Manchurian Candidate another shot. If possible, watch it late at night I still think it's one of Sinatra's greatest roles. And the famous continuous shot of the brainwashing session, where the garden party turns into the Communist gathering, is one of the greats of all time. As for the Bullet jump, I only wish I'd seen the movie before my sole trip to San Francisco many years ago.

    Adoro,
Mea maxima culpa indeed, although if it's any consolation to you, you're not the only memer (is that really a word?) we've stiffed. Actually, I prefer to use the word "overlook," since it often has to do with never getting around to something. (For example, you should read some of the Christmas posts I never got around to writing.) We can only attempt to make a better effort this year. I agree that Gone in 60 Seconds could go either way, but I put in in the B-film category since a movie with three Oscar winners in it (Cage, Jolie and Duvall) probably ought to aspire to more than an adreneline rush. Good fun nonetheless!
